Situation Analysis and Rationale

Kenya has a youthful and rapidly growing population, with children, adolescents, and youth constituting the majority of the country’s citizens. More than half of the population is below the age of 25, presenting immense potential for national development. However, many young people continue to face significant challenges including poverty, food insecurity, limited access to quality education, inadequate learning infrastructure, unemployment, and insufficient opportunities for innovation and skills development.

Children are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition, poor learning outcomes, school absenteeism, and inadequate access to safe and supportive learning environments. Many schools lack sufficient classrooms, learning materials, and educational resources needed to provide quality education. Hunger remains a major barrier to learning, affecting school attendance, concentration, retention, and academic performance among vulnerable learners.

Adolescents face additional challenges including school dropout, early pregnancies, child marriage, substance abuse, mental health concerns, and limited access to life skills and career development opportunities. These challenges often hinder their successful transition into adulthood and productive participation in society.

Young people continue to experience high levels of unemployment and underemployment despite increasing educational attainment. Many lack access to technical skills, entrepreneurship training, digital literacy, innovation platforms, mentorship, and employment opportunities. The growing digital economy requires competencies that many young people, especially those in underserved communities, are unable to access due to limited ICT infrastructure and resources.

Although government and development partners have implemented interventions such as free basic education, school feeding programs, youth empowerment initiatives, and social protection programs, significant gaps remain. Many schools still require additional classrooms, ICT laboratories, digital learning tools, and sustainable feeding programs. Furthermore, there is insufficient research and evidence to guide targeted interventions for the most vulnerable children, adolescents, and youth.

Y-Care recognizes that sustainable change requires addressing these interconnected challenges through evidence-based and holistic interventions. Through research, education support, school feeding programs, classroom construction, ICT laboratory development, innovation hubs, mentorship, leadership development, and youth empowerment initiatives, Y-Care seeks to bridge existing gaps and create opportunities for children, adolescents, and youth to thrive.

By investing in education, nutrition, digital inclusion, innovation, and empowerment, Y-Care aims to nurture healthy, skilled, and resilient generations capable of breaking cycles of poverty, driving innovation, and contributing meaningfully to sustainable development in Kenya and across Africa.
